Chapter Six

Walking in the Spirit of the Medicine Wheel

Learning to See What We Normally Do Not See

Overview: This activity contains five parts: drawing the medicine wheel, reflective writing, activating volition for promises of future action, discover connections with others, and serving others. Participants learn about the gifts of the four directions and move around a medicine wheel that they create.

Materials: Drawing paper, heavy cardboard such as poster board, wood slabs, or animal hide large enough for drawing the medicine wheel. I suggest starting with paper or poster board. Pencils, crayons, markers, or paint. Something to use for creating a large circle. I’ve used pie tins, dinner plates, and the rim of a round wastebasket. A ruler or yardstick or anything that can be used to draw straight lines across the entire circle. If circles within the outer circle are desired, a compass is useful.

Suggested time: Two hours and ten minutes minimum. The times listed below are suggested times only, not requirements. This activity contains five detailed steps that could easily be extended over five separate sessions or more. If more extensive reflection or writing is desired, time may be extended. The medicine wheel may also be repeatedly used for infinite learning experiences and for creating many plans for promises of future action.

Types of learning: Drawing, reflecting, analysis, writing, and discussion. This activity moves beyond a strictly cognitive approach to learning and relies on the physical, the emotional, the mental, and the spiritual ways we learn.

Participants: Small groups preferred. If doing this alone, skip part 4 or modify it to attain feedback from people who have not completed the activity.

Rhetorical forms: Self-selected by participant. The activity asks for writing at various spots. This writing could take the form of lists, sentences, songs, poems, essays, letters, and journal entries.

Prerequisite: None
